Rights activists at an event called for women-friendly environment in workplaces and an end to sexual harassment to ensure the protection of women in the country.
They also demanded the ratification of the ILO Convention-190 to help achieve gender equity.
On the occasion of International Women's Day, Karmojibi Nari organised the event on Tuesday in collaboration with the Tere des Hommes Italia on the theme 'Stop Violence and Ratify ILO Convention-190 to Ensure Gender Equality', according to a press release.
The speakers said, International Women's Day comes as recognition of the struggle of women workers, started against the 12-hour work, unpaid wages and inhumane work environment 175 years ago at a needle factory in America.
It is true that the awareness of women has increased but women have not been able to eradicate their discrimination and deprivation, they added.
The speakers further said that the demands for equal wages, fixed working hours and a humane environment which were being made in 1,857 had not been implemented even today.
Gender inequality still exists in the family, society and state. Not only discrimination but women are also victims of various forms of violence from home to work.
Due to the lack of law enforcement and women have restricted to the 'Social Taboo of Girl'. For that reasons establishment of equal status and equality is still blocked. So, first of all, it is necessary to liberate women from the circle of girls and uproot the roots of patriarchal attitude, they observed.
Coordinator Hasina Akhter presided over the programme and spoke Tere des Hommes Italia Monitoring Officer Rocky Bissawas at the human chain.
Karmojibi Nari’s coordinator and National Workers Alliance-Bangladesh Central Office Secretary Rajib Ahmed, among others were present at the programme.
