NILPHAMARI, July 30: Jute growers of the district have started ribbon retting technology to process the cash crop.
The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) sources said it is a method to separate ribbon from jute stalks and rot those in a ditch to decompose those properly.
The size of a ditch should be six metre in length, two metre in breadth and one metre in depth. Fibers should be kept in water for about 12 days.
Sources said in 2017, the DAE distributed 550 ribbon retting devices among the farmers across the district.
DAE officials are providing need-based training to the farmers in organised groups.
A group consists of 10 to 15 members are to use one ribbon machine.
Farmer Azizar Rahman of Itakhola union of Sadar upazila said ribbon retting method is comfortable and cost friendly.
Sources said processed jute in this technology is of high quality and the farmers are benefited as they get high prices by adopting the same.
