Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Tuesday cut Roads and Highways Department (RHD)’s construction proposal of two rest houses costing some Tk 70 million as those are ‘unnecessary spending’ of the pubic funds, a minister said.

The premier had also asked the authorities not to build the rest houses beside the roads as those are now-a-days immaterial due to better transportation system in the country, said Planning Minister MA Mannan after the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) meeting in Dhaka.

At the ECNEC meeting, the RHD’s road widening proposal was placed where the road developer proposed to construct two rest houses at separate couple of road development projects.

MA Mannan said the prime minister had asked the RHD to prepare a separate project for the rest houses if needed rather to incorporate those with the road reconstruction projects.

The minister said the ECNEC approved six fresh projects and revised one ongoing project at a combined cost of Tk 34.62 billion at its meeting on Tuesday.

Out of total costs, the government would provide Tk 26.20 billion from its internal resources while the remaining Tk 8.42 billion from the external resources as the project aid.

Ministers, planning commission members and secretaries of the relevant ministries were present at the meeting.
