SYLHET, July 01: Emergency protection and reconstruction works on the flood control embankments and structures in different districts of Sylhet division are going on.
The Water Development Board (WDB) has been doing the works at a total expenditure of Tk 227.881 million, said an official on Sunday.
WDB Chief Engineer, North East region (Sylhet), Md Nizam Ul Haque Bhuiyan told this correspondent the affected embankments and some severely erosion-hit riverbanks under the division are being repaired or reconstructed with a target to saving concerned areas and institutions at places from further erosion or heavy rain.
Synthetic and geo-textile bags filled with sand are being used for protecting the riverside places, he added, while some senior officials were supervising the works.
Most of the places were affected by the early rains and rolling of water from the upstream on the bordering hilly regions in Sunamagnj and Moulvibazar districts, the official informed.
In Moulvibazar district, reconstruction of embankments and riverbank protection works had been done at 45 locations along a total of 7.372 km at a cost of Tk 43.993 million.
These were done to save the concerned areas from the bordering rivers Dholai and Monu, which often cause trouble for the inhabitants of several upazilas.
In Habiganj district, repair of the flood control embankments and temporary riverbank protection works in different upazilas and at the district town was being done on 28 locations totaling 2.087 km at a cost of Tk 55.4 million.
These would save Habiganj town and Digholbak areas, in addition to other important areas.
In the same way the Surma riverbank at the Sunamganj district town and at Doarabazar upazila Complex area protection works were being done alongside other places in Chhatak upazila were done along a total of 1.085 km at a cost of Tk 50.198 million.
In Sylhet district, protective works were done at Lobachhara of frontier Kanaighat upazila in addition to the riverbank protection at part of Sylhet city and embankment protection alongside other erosion-hit places. The works had been done at 56 places totaling 8.929 km with a cost of Tk 77.47 million.
The emergency works would protect the said important sites and riverbanks from immediate flash flood or sudden calamities like erosion and others, the official said.
