Four new tiger cubs were born in Chattogram Zoo recently. These cubs came from the tiger couple 'Raj-Pori,' purchased from South Africa in 2016.
Among the cubs, 3 are males and, 1 is female. The name of the three male cubs are Padma, Meghna, and Sangu, respectively, and Halda is the name of the female cub.
But their speciality is that they all belong to the rare species of white tiger, where one white tiger is found in every 1000 tigers in the world.
While none of the parents belongs to the white tiger species, how the cubs came to be like that? In response to this question, zoo authority said, "Perhaps anyone of the parents has a genetic trait of white tiger, which ultimately led to making it occur."
Chattogram zoo currently has 16 tigers, with some white tigers descendants apart from these four cubs.
According to zoo authorities, the cubs will only drink their mother's milk up to two months after birth and will be completely isolated from the general public during this time. And after two months, they will be accustomed to feeding different foods with the mother at the mother's cage.
Dr Mohammad Shahadat Hossen Shuvo, Deputy Curator of Chattogram Zoo, said, "The number of tigers is increasing in Chattogram Zoo. It proves this is a suitable place for them to reproduce and grow. And considering it, we are now making new cages in the zoo for them."
If other zoos want to take tigers from us, we may agree to give them, and also we are thinking of releasing some tigers in Sundarbans forest," he added.
