RANGPUR, May 8: The ridge gourd (Jhinga) cultivators across the district are overjoyed to make good profit from its sale this season.
The farmers are also witnessing an abundant yield of the vegetable this year on account of a congenial weather condition.
Visiting some areas including Ranipukur union of Mithapukur upazila, Alampur union under Taraganj this FE correspondent found the growers busy taking care of their jhinga fields. Many were busy harvesting their produces.
Traders from Dhaka and some other districts are coming to the region everyday to buy fresh vegetables directly from the growers thus the farmers can make handsome profit, growers said.
Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) sources said this year different varieties of vegetables including ridge gourd are being cultivated plentifully in different upazilas including Mithapukur, Gangachara,Taraganj and Pirgachha under the district.
Use of modern technology and quick compost has enhanced the production of jhinga and many other vegetables, sources added.
Farmer Ashraful of Rupshi village at Ranipukur area in Mithapukur upazila told The Financial Express that the area is well-known for vegetable farming. Hundreds of families of the area have changed their financial condition by vegetable farming. He has cultivated it on 30 decimals of land this season and has already begun harvesting his produce and delighted to get good price even at field level.
The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) official sources said due to huge demand and good profit cultivation of different varieties of vegetables including ridge gourd is on the rise across the district.
DAE is also helping the farmers with necessary advices to boost up vegetable farming across the region, sources added.
