Rangpur growers expect plentiful yield of wheat

RANGPUR, Jan 24: The farmers in five districts under Rangpur agriculture region are expecting a plentiful yield of wheat during the current season.

This year the wheat cultivators of Rangpur agriculture region are delighted to witness a favourable weather condition which predicts a good yield of the crop.

While visiting some areas of the region this FE correspondent saw that wheat plants growing well in the region.

Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), Rangpur sources the department has set a target to cultivate wheat on around 23,763 hectares of land during this Rabi season in five districts in the zone. The districts are Rangpur, Kurigram, Gaibandha, Nilphamari and Lalmonirhat.

Owing to good profit and repeated good yields in comparison with some other crops the peasants are showing their interest in the cultivation of wheat in recent years.

Motahar, a farmer of Shukurerhat area at Mithapukur Upazila in Rangpur told The Financial Express that he cultivated the crop on 45 decimals of land during this season and plants are growing well, signaling a bumper production of the crop. If the weather remains congenial he will get satisfactory output, he said.

Ahidul, another farmer of village Khansama at Kawnia upazila in Rangpur said he cultivated the crop on one and a half bigha of land this year and is expecting an abundant crop putput, if the weather remains conducive.

Last year he also got good yield as well as satisfactory price of the crop which encouraged him to enhance its farming this season, he further said.

Sources said like in the mainland, the landless and river eroded char people have also brought more char lands under wheat farming this year.

Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) sources said sufficient water supply, agri-inputs and congenial weather condition enhanced its cultivation in the region this year, making the farmers hopeful of a good output of the crop.

Growers are being given necessary advice and assistance in order to boost the production of the crop this year, sources added.
