Rail communications resume in Sylhet after eight hours

Rail communications have resumed between Sylhet and the rest of Bangladesh after an eight-hour pause.

Train services were on halt as trees fell on the railroads as storms swept over Moulvibazar. The rail links were restored around 1pm on Tuesday.

Rail and forest authorities undertook a rescue operation, said Kabir Ahmed, station master of Shamsher Nagar Railway Station in Kamalganj.

Divisional Forest Officer Shamsul Muid Chowdhury said the railroads were blocked by fallen trees and electrical poles, according to bdnews24.

An Udyan Express train from Chattogram to Sylhet was struck by a storm around 4am on Tuesday when it was crossing the Lawachara forest, according to rail officials.

A tree fell on the train’s engine leaving hundreds of passengers stranded.

Several trains remained stuck in other areas after the Sylhet-Akhaura railway link snapped around 4:25am on Tuesday.

Dhaka-bound Kalni Express train was stranded at Shamshernagar Station while a Jalalabad Express train was at Satgoan Station in Srimangal.
