GOPALGANJ, Nov 06: Farmers of Raghunathpur union under Gopalganj Sadar are growing early winter tomato on a vast tract of land.
Dilip Biswas of Raghunathpur village said he is growing 'Beautiful' variety of the item on two bighas of land this season.
Early winter tomato farming is popular among the growers as they can make good profit every season, the farmer said.
According to Sadar upazila agriculture office sources, a total of 55 hectares of land have been brought under tomato cultivation in the upazila this current season.
Of the total some 16 hectares of land have been brought under the farming of the fruit in Raghunathpur union with the production target of 1,000 tonnes.
Some 200 farmers in the union are farming the item this season.
Prodip Halder, sub-assistant agriculture officer of Raghunathpur Block said the area is well-known for growing quality tomato. It is improving financial condition of the grassroots growers in the district.
Narayandranath Baddya of Silna village said tomato cultivation is more profitable. It is short-duration and ensures a healthy return. Moreover, it requires low production cost.
The grower said, "I have cultivated tomato on 60 decimals of land this season. I am happy over the present condition of my field and expecting a pumper yield."
Md Mizanur Rahman, upazila agriculture officer, Gopalganj Sadar, said cultivators are busy taking care of their tomato field.
"We are expecting a good yield if weather condition remains favourable", the official added.
