Rafia's death: Four Max Hospital doctors get bail

Four doctors of Max Hospital in Chattogram have secured bail in the case filed over the death of a child, Raifa, due to the negligence and improper treatment by the doctors at the hospital.

Acting Chief Metropolitan Magistrate of Chattogram, Abu Saleh Md Noman approved their bail on Monday morning, said the defendants’ lawyer Advocate Mejbah Uddin Chowdhury, reports bdnews24.com.

The bail recipients are Dr Bidhan Roy Chowdhury, Dr Debashish Sengupta, Dr Shuvro Deb and Managing Director of Max Hospital Dr Liakat Ali Khan.

“The magistrate has approved bail to all of them on bonds of Tk 10,000 each until the charge sheet is submitted following hearings,” the lawyer said.

Raifa, the two-and-a-half-year-old daughter of Rubel Khan, a senior correspondent of the Dainik Smakal’s Chattogram Bureau, was admitted to Max Hospital with complaints of a throat ache on Jun 28 and died on the night of Jun 29.

Journalists staged a protest over the death of Raifa due to ‘improper treatment’ and police detained a doctor and a nurse on duty and took them to the police station.

Later, Dr Faisal Iqbal, general secretary of Chattogram wing of Bangladesh Medical Association, went to the police station and arranged for their release.

Doctors and journalists in Chattogram confronted each other over the incident and held opposing protests in response to it.

The private hospitals in Chattogram held a day-long strike after RAB conducted a drive on Max Hospital and fined them.

Directorate General of Health Services or DGHS had formed a probe committee on Raifa’s death while another three-member committee led by the civil surgeon of Chattogram investigated the incident.

The investigation committee led by the civil surgeon said it found the doctors, nurses and the hospital authority to be guilty of ‘negligence of duty’ and recommended necessary action be taken against three doctors involved in the case.

Raifa’s father Rubel Khan filed a case with Chawk Bazar Police Station accusing four doctors.
