Quota to go, BCL says citing PM

Leaders of the Bangladesh Chhatra League claim that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will remove quotas from civil service jobs.

The statements from BCL President Saifur Rahman Sohag and General Secretary SM Jakir Hossain came on Wednesday amid nationwide protests from students and job seekers calling for reforms to the quota system for government jobs.

Contacted regarding the matter, Awami League student wing leader Sohag said, “We met with the prime minister. She told us that there will no longer be any quotas for government jobs.”

The posts spreading quickly on Facebook were by the BCL, he said.

The prime minister may make a statement on the matter during the parliamentary session on Wednesday, he said, reports bdnews24.

“We have seen the status posted by Chhatra League President Sohag,” ‘Council for the Preservation of Bangladesh General Students’ Rights’ Joint Convener Nurul Haque said when asked about the matter.

“But we do not want to hear it from the mouths of others. We will not call off our protest until we hear a clear and direct decision from the prime minister.”
