The demonstration demanding reformation in existing quota system for public service will remain postponed until May 7.
The decision was taken at a meeting with 20 representatives of the protesters at Secretariat on Monday afternoon, said several televisions.
Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader convened the meeting following a countrywide protest on Sunday. He addressed a press briefing after the meeting.
Hasan Al Mamun, convener of Sadharan Chhatra Odhikar Sangrakkhan Parishad, also confirmed the media about the decision.
Obaidul Quader said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will announce final reformation after scrutinising existing quota system by May 7.
The Prime Minister already directed to scrutinise the quota system, Obaidul Quader said.
The road transport and bridges minister said the government has taken the movement positively.
"The innocent protesters will be released by tonight (Monday)," Obaidul Quader said.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police will conduct investigation into some violent acts during the movement.
According to bdnews24.com, the meeting was started around 4.30pm on Monday at conference room of road transport and bridges ministry.
Awami League leaders Mahbubul Alam Hanif, Jahangir Kabir Nanok, AFM Bahauddin Nasim, Enamul Haque Shamim and Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury joined the meeting.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner Asaduzzaman Mia was also present at the meeting.
Students and job-seekers started demonstrations against the quota system in government jobs on February 17.
Their protests took a violent turn following police action on the demonstrating students at Shahbagh on Sunday.
On March 7, the government issued a notification relaxing its previous system of preserving vacant posts.
Now the posts of different government jobs, which remain vacant for not getting eligible candidates from quota, will be filled from merit lists.
