Students demanding reforms to the civil service quota system have again taken up positions on the Dhaka University campus and continued protests after overnight clashes with police and Chhatra League activists.
The protesting students organised a press conference in front of the DU central library around 11am and claimed that at least 40 protesters had been detained on Sunday.
“The wrath of students will be felt across Bangladesh’ on Monday evening if the detainees are not released by noon,” the demonstrators warned.
English Department of DU student Nurul Haq and Banking and Insurance Department student Md Rashed Khan spoke to the media in the presence of several hundred protesters.
The protesters claimed that the vandalism of the Vice Chancellor’s residence was not connected with the protests in any way.
‘Outside criminals’ were responsible for the attack, they said denying their involvement in the VC’s residence vandalism.
The protesters called for disclosing the identification and arrest of one of the attackers who was caught by the television cameras.
After yesterday’s nightlong clashes with police at Dhaka University, the movement has gained pace with protests in other parts of the country.
Students of Jahangirnagar University, Rajshahi University, Shahjalal University, Chittagong University resumed protests this morning.
