BOGURA, Aug 16: Pungchu grass, an Australian variety, cultivation is gaining popularity in the district.
A good number of farmers said Pungchu grass farming is now profitable venture as commercial cattle rearing is expanding in the area.
The grass is helpful for cattleheads. It helps increase stamina of the cattleheads, they added.
The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) office source said peasants along with some cattle farm owners have brought over 30 hectares of land under the grass cultivation this season.
Meanwhile, they got a praiseworthy result from the grass variety and the farmers are very much satisfied with the situation, DAE added.
The grass can be used as fodder for livestock animals after 60 days of its cultivation.
Growers can cultivate the grass on high barren land. It requires low cost.
If a farmer rears ten cows, he needs to grow the grass on thirty decimals of land. DAE sources added.
"I have cultivated Pungchu grass on a bigha of land spending Tk 5,000 this season," said farmer Shiplu Rahman of Sherpur upazila.
Protul Chandra Sarker, deputy director of DAE, said the high-yielding Pungchu grass has become popular among the cattle farmers across the area due to its nutritious value.
District livestock official said growers should bring more land under the farming Pungchu grass as its demand is creasing.
