Public interest priority in procuring vaccine: FM

The government will give priority to the interest of the people while procuring Covid-19 vaccine, said Foreign minister Dr AK Abdul Momen on Monday.

The mister said it to newsmen, after a discussion meeting in the city, when he was asked about the government’s diplomatic effort in getting the Covid-19 vaccine.

Bangladesh is in contact with both China and its regional rival India for procuring Covid-19 vaccines, he said.

“Bangladesh has no special preference for any country in regards to procure Covid-19 vaccine. We will try our best to get that one which will be invented first” said Mr Momen.

“Our priority is our people. We will try to get Covid-19 vaccine as soon as it will be invented” the minister said urging all not to do politics centring the vaccine.

Asked about the Chinese vaccine trial, the minister said, a reputed Chinese company reached an agreement for conducting trial of their vaccine with the ICDDRB, which is also a world famous institute.

He also said that the government had also contacted the organisation in the UK which is in the process of producing Oxford vaccine but they are yet to respond.

Asked about the development regarding Bangladesh’s move to get Oxford vaccine from an Indian company, the minister said he had no update regarding this.

Fugitive killers of Bangabandhu to be brought back

Earlier, addressing a discussion meeting on Bangabandhu Shekih Mujiber Rahman, the Foreign Minister said the government is committed to bring back five killers of Bangladesh to execute them implementing the court verdict.

The fugitives are: Col (dismissed) Khandaker Abdur Rashid, Lt Col (relieved) Shariful Haque Dalim, Maj (retd) Noor Chowdhury, Maj (retd) Rashed Chowdhury and Risaldar Moslehuddin Khan.

The minister said that the USA has started a process to review the asylum permission of Rashed Chowdhury.

Another fugitive killer Noor Chowdhury is in Canada, and the government is in regular contact with Canadian government to bring back him home, the minister said.

The Foreign Minister said the government continues its efforts to know about the locations of the other three killers.
