Proposal sent to PM to form committee over quota system

A proposal has been sent to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to form a committee to take a decision on the quota system in public services.

Senior Secretary to the Public Administration Ministry M Mozammel Haque Khan made the disclosure on Thursday.

The committee will be constituted with the cabinet secretary as its head and there will be 4-5 members in it, he said.

On Wednesday, Bangladesh General Students' Rights Protection Alliance gave the government a 24-hour ultimatum to publish a gazette notification on abolishing quota system in government jobs as per the Prime Minister's announcement.

The protesters threatened to go on a tougher movement from Sunday if their demand was not fulfilled by the given time, reports UNB.

The senior secretary said the committee will decide whether the quota system will be abolished or reformed. "The gazette notification will be issued after the committee's recommendations," he said, adding that the proposal to constitute the committee was sent to the Prime Minister today (Thursday).

Mozammel expressed the hope that the Prime Minister will take a decision over the committee formation in a couple of days. "The committee will put forward its recommendations and then a decision will be taken as per all's expectations."
