Prominent playwright, former JU Pro-VC Afsar Ahmed passes away

Professor Afsar Ahmed, former Pro-VC of Jahangirnagar University and a prominent playwright passed away on Saturday.

The professor of Drama and Dramatics department breathed his last at the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases around 1:45 pm today, said Chair of Drama and Dramatics department at JU professor Dr Shoma Mumtaz.

Professor Afsar was returning from Jashore by air on Saturday when he suffered a heart condition. He was taken to the Critical care Unit (CCU) of National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases where he was declared dead later, said professor Mumtaz.

Vice Chancellor of JU Dr Farzana Islam expressed grief at the death of the meritorious professor and said his death has caused an immense loss to Bengali drama, reports UNB.

Professor Afsar Ahmed was born on September 30, 1959 in Uttar Jamsha village in Singair Upazila of Manikganj district.

He started his career as a lecturer of Bangla department at JU and later in 1986 he joined the Drama and Dramatics department of the university.

The professor was also well known as a poet, playwright, translator, researcher and critic of literature.
