Prime suspect, who ‘murdered’ cable-TV business owner, killed in crossfire

Prime suspect in Wednesday's killing of a cable operator in Badda was killed in crossfire between his cohorts and detectives in the city's Aftabnagar early Thursday, claimed police, according to UNB. 

According to the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), Shafayet Tanvir, the main suspect in the killing of Abdur Razzak alias Dish Babu, received bullet injuries falling in line of fire during a gunfight between his cohorts and detectives when the latter took him along to nab his other accomplices from Aftabnagar area.

Police said that Tanvir's cohorts fled the scene at 5:00am leaving two pistols and two magazines behind while Tanvir was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead.

Earlier on Wednesday, Dish Babu got killed allegedly in a sequel to a rivalry over supremacy in Gulshan, Bhatara and Badda areas centring trading of cable connection, detectives said.

Dish Babu, owner of 'Max Cable' was gunned down allegedly by his rival 'Robin Company' group in the capital's South Badda area on Wednesday night.

Detectives said followers of Robin Company, who have long been trying to take control of cable business in Gulshan, Bhatara and Badda areas from Malaysia, made an earlier attempt on Dish Babu on May 7 but in vein. The group succeeded in its second attempt on Wednesday.

Talking to UNB, Deputy Commissioner (DC)of DB-North division Moshiur Rahman said the DB started its investigation to unearth the mystery behind the killing right after the killing.

He said several groups have been controlling cable operation in greater Gulshan area, including Bhatara and Badda. Dish Babu and his followers have been controlled Badda Jagoroni Club area, while members of' Robin Company' group comprising of Shafayet Tanvir, Helal, Shuvo and Ovi was trying to capture the area.

Robin Company from Malaysia allegedly ordered his gang members in Dhaka to kill Dish Babu using mobile apps on Wednesday. 

Getting the instruction, Shafayet Tanvir, Helal and Ovi allegedly collected firearms from another group member Shuvo from a place near Gulshan Commerce College.

Then the trio-Shafayet Tanvir, Helal and Ovi went to Jagoroni Club by a motorbike to carry out their killing mission in the evening. Once the mission was accomplished, they fled the scene riding the motorbike amidst chase by the locals.

At one stage, Shafayet Tanvir entered inside a shop, while Helal and Ovi fled the scene leaving the motorbike near Bepari Tower in the area. Later, SWAT and DB teams went to the spot and arrested Tanvir. Two more suspects-Sohel and Rasel were also detained from the spot.

Following interrogation detectives came to know that Sohel and Rasel were not involved in the Dish Babu killing. Tanvir, however, admitted of firing shot at Dish Babu and also revealed reason behind the killing as well as disclosed the names of Ovi and Helel who fled the scene along with more firearms, the DC (DB-North) Moshiur Rahmanm said.
