President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Tueday paid their tribute to members of the Armed Forces, who made their supreme sacrifices in the War of Liberation, by placing floral wreaths at the Shikha Anirban at Dhaka Cantonment this morning on the occasion of the Armed Forces Day.

The President, who is also the Supreme Commander of Armed Forces, placed wreaths at the altar of Shikha Anirban (eternal flame) at 8:00am and stood in solemn silence for a while as a mark of respect to memories of the martyrs.

President Hamid was followed by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina who holds the defence ministry. She placed a floral wreath before the flame for honouring the nation’s martyrs, reports a news agency.

After laying the wreath, she stood in solemn silence for sometime as a mark of profound respect to the memories of the martyrs, who made supreme sacrifices during the War of Liberation in 1971.

Both were greeted by the heads of army, air force, and navy and the principal staff officer of the Armed Forces Division.

President and PM also signed the visitor's book kept on the premises of Shikha Anirban.

On this day during the War of Liberation in 1971, the Bangladesh Armed Forces comprising Army, Navy, and Air Force, came into being and launched an all-out attack on the Pakistani occupation forces.

Since the country's independence, this historic day is being observed as the Armed Forces Day every year.
