President Md Abdul Hamid will join a special summit of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in Istanbul on the Jerusalem issue, the foreign minister said.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan called the summit after US President Donald Trump’s shift on Jerusalem, AH Mahmood Ali said at a media briefing on Sunday.

Turkey holds the chairmanship of the OIC now.

Bangladesh earlier joined the international community to condemn Trump’s announcement.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said the move would jeopardise the peace efforts Washington itself had initiated.

“Bangladesh stresses on preserving the legal status of Jerusalem within the framework of relevant UN resolutions,” the foreign ministry earlier said.

“Bangladesh reaffirms its position in favour of establishing the State of Palestine on the basis of the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.”

Bangladesh also urged all related parties to take a “pragmatic approach” to the Middle East Peace Process in reaching a two-state solution for peace and stability in the region.

President Hamid will leave Dhaka on Monday for the meeting on Dec 13, reports bdnews24.

Before the meeting, there will be senior official level meeting on Dec 12.

State Minister for Foreign Affairs Md Shahriar Alam will accompany the president to the meeting.

The foreign minister said the president’s visit is “significant” as Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım will visit Bangladesh a week after the summit.

Yıldırım will visit Bangladesh on Dec 19-20, said a senior official.
