Polka, alternative to traditional plastic bags

Shalbrikkho, a Bangladeshi company that specializes in biodegradable and recycled materials, has developed 'Polka,' a green and sustainable alternative to typical plastics.

Polka is a type of bioplastic manufactured from potatoes or potato starch. This substance, like typical plastics, is semi-transparent. It degrades in the soil in maximum 180 days.

Although the usage of plastics cannot be eliminated, environmentally friendly plastics may be able to help minimise pollution while also meeting the needs of consumers. As a result, Polka can be an alternative to polythene shopping bags.

There is a storage limitation as the bag is made of natural components. In hot and humid climates, Polka bags can be preserved for three to four months. However, if the environment is cold and dry, these bags can be stored and used for up to 10 months.

Bangladesh creates roughly 3,000 tons of plastic garbage per day, according to the Department of Environment (DoE). Along with other environmental issues, overuse of polythene bags pollutes and litters towns.
