The grand rally of the Jatiya Oikyafront at Suhrawardy Udyan due for December 27 hangs in the balance uncertain as it has not got police permission.

A senior leader of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) made the disclosure on Sunday.

"As per the Representation of the People Order (RPO), we (Oikyafront) could hold our rally until the morning of December 28," BNP standing committee member Nazrul Islam Khan.

"Much earlier we sought police permission for rally on December 27, but they (police) didn't allow us to stage the programme," he told the media.

In the afternoon, Mr Khan handed over a letter to Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda at Agargaon Nirbachan Bhaban in the capital.

He said police told them that there would be no rally after December 24 in the capital.

"We informed the chief election commissioner of the matter. He took notes and assured us of looking into the matter," Mr Khan said.

The senior leader of the BNP, a vital component of the Oikyafront, spoke about the army presence in the electoral field from today.

He said, "Our patriotic army has earned name and fame globally for their praiseworthy role in establishing peace in different parts of the world."

"We believe our army will play a pivotal role in the upcoming election," Mr Khan mentioned.

BNP candidates in Fatikchhari, Noakahli-4, Debitbar and Langolkot constituencies came under attack by ruling-party activists in the presence of police, he alleged.
