Hifazat-e-Islam, a Qawmi madrasa-based Islamist party in the country, has elected its new ameer and secretary general on Sunday.
A council meeting of the party has made Juanyed Babunagari its new Ameer. Besides, Nur Hossain Kasemi has been made the party’s secretary general.
Previously, Junayed Babunagari and Nur Hossain Kasemi were the secretary general and Dhaka city unit president of the party, respectively.
Hifazat-e-Islam is headquartered in the port city of Chittagong, where hundreds of madrassas draw tens of thousands of young Muslims for schooling.
A 151- member central committee of the organisation has also been announced in the meeting.
On September 18, 2020 Shah Ahmad Shafi, the first Ameer and the supreme leader of the group, died at the age of 103.
