Five BNP leaders have collected their party’s nomination forms to contest the upcoming elections to Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) as a mayoral candidate of ‘Sheaf of Paddy’.
The five nomination seekers are Chattogram City unit BNP president Dr Shahdat Hossain, general secretary Abu Hashem Bakkar, vice president Syed Azamuddin, ex-joint secretary Ershad Uallah and ex-councillor Niaz Muhammad Khan.
They bought the nomination forms at Tk 10,000 each from the party’s Nayapaltan central office as it started selling the nomination forms on Monday, BNP’s assistant office secretary Taiful Islam Tipu said on Wednesday, reports UNB.
He said the aspirants will have to submit the forms at the same office with Tk 30,000 security money by February 23 after filling those properly.
Tipu said their party’s nomination board will take interview of the nomination seekers on February 24 at BNP Chairperson’s Gulshan office and finalise the party’s mayoral candidate for the CCC polls.
Election to Chattogram City Corporation and by-elections to Bogura-1 and Jashore -6 seats will be held on March 29.
As per the schedule announced by the Election Commission, the deadline for the submission of nomination papers is February 27 while the scrutiny of nomination papers is on March 1 and the last date for the withdrawal of candidacy is March 8.
The election symbol will be allotted on March 9.
Awami League on Saturday picked Rezaul Karim Chowdhury, joint general secretary of Chattogram city unit of the party, to contest the CCC mayoral election.
The last elections to the CCC were held on April 28, 2015.
Besides, four BNP leaders bought the party nomination forms to contest the Jashore-6 seat by-polls and 9 ones to run the Bogura-1 constituency by-election.
Local BNP leader M Nuruzzaman Tapan, Abdus Samad Biswas, Mostafizur Rahman and Amelendu Das Opu collected party nomination forms to contest the Jashore-6 by-polls with ‘Sheaf of Paddy, the electoral symbol of the party.
Those who bought BNP’s nomination forms to contest Bogura-1 by election are Mosharraf Hossain Chowdhury, Shahidunnabi Salam, Quazi Erfanur Rahman Rentu, Dr Shah M Shahjahn Ali, Belal Hossain, AKM Ahsanul Toyab Jakir, ASM Rafiqul Islam Biswas, Dr Shmasul Alam and Masudur Rahman.
The aspirants for the two by-polls will also face the interview by the party nomination board on February 24.
The Bogura-1 and Jashore-6 seats fell vacant following the deaths of AL MPs Abdul Mannan and Ismat Ara Sadique.
