Court dismisses BNP’s case against DB chief, nine others

A Dhaka court on Sunday summarily rejected a petition submitted by a BNP executive committee member to lodge a suit against the chief of detective branch of police and nine other law enforcement officials on the charge of looting and vandalising the party's Naya Paltan office on December 7 last year.

Judge of the Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate, Rajesh Chowdhury, passed the order, said Masud Ahmed Talukder, petitioner's counsel.

Earlier on the day, Nazimuddin Alam, a former lawmaker from Bhola-4 constituency, submitted a petition to file a case against the chief of the detective branch of police Harun-Or-Rashid and nine other law enforcement officials. Later the court recorded his statement.

Masud Ahmed Talukder said, “BNP office at Naya Paltan was looted and vandalized on December 7 last year. A petition has been submitted to lodge a case against the chief of detective branch of police and nine other law enforcement officials on the issue. However, the court rejected the petition.”

On December 7, a Swechchasebak Dal leader was killed. Around 50 others were injured in a clash between police and the BNP activists in front of the party’s Naya Paltan central office ahead of its December 10 rally.

Police later started three cases against up to 2,000 people over the incident. They also cordoned off the party office.
