Candidates storm RCC electioneering through campaigns

Soon after getting their respective election symbols on Tuesday noon, the candidates for both mayoral and general councillor posts in the upcoming Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) polls have launched hectic campaign to attract voters’ attention.

Within a gap of only few hours, several parts of the city got a new look with huge posters, banners and festoons.

Workers and activists of the candidates were seen very much busy hanging posters and opening election offices throughout the city. A total of 217 candidates have remained in race of the upcoming RCC election scheduled to be held on July 30.

Of them, five for mayor, 160 for general councillors and 52 for reserved seats for women councillors.

Election officials published the list of candidates on Monday afternoon which was the deadline for withdrawal of candidature. Subsequently, the returning officer allocated election symbol to the candidates on Tuesday.

Assistant Returning Officer Atiar Rahman said AHM Khairuzzaman Liton (Boat), Musaddique Hossain Bulbul (Paddy Sheaf), Habibur Rahman (Jackfruit), Shafiqul Islam (Hand fan) and Advocate Murad Murshed (Elephant) are the mayoral candidates.

Meanwhile, Awami League nominee mayoral candidate AHM Khairuzzaman Liton announced his election manifesto, promising to generate employment opportunities for 0.1 million unemployed people if he was elected.

He announced the 14-point election manifesto at a press conference at the party’s city unit office in Rajshahi Tuesday noon.

In the manifesto, he put emphasis on creating of employment and accelerating of education and healthcare services to build Rajshahi as a mega city, reports BSS.

Assistant Returning Officer Atiar Rahman said there are 3,18,138 voters including 1,62,053 female voters who will exercise their right of franchise at 138 centres to elect one mayor, 30 general councillors and 10 women councillors in reserved seats in the upcoming election.

Rahman added that all preparations were taken for holding the election on July 30 peacefully and successfully.
