A group of leaders and activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League on Sunday demonstrated on the Dhaka University campus protesting against the vandalism of an under-construction sculpture of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in Kushtia.

Several hundred leaders and activists of the ruling party student front gathered in TSC area and shouted slogans.

In Savar, the upazila unit activists of BCL brought out a procession in Savar Bazar Bustand on Dhaka-Aricha Highway protesting the incident, UNB reports.

They also demanded exemplary punishment of those involved in the incident.

Miscreants vandalised an under-construction sculpture of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in Kushtia city early Saturday. The face and hands of the sculpture were damaged.

The incident sparked protests across Bangladesh.

To mark Bangabandhu's birth centenary, the local administration decided to install three sculptures of Bangabandhu at the intersection of five streets in the town in November this year.

Also, it planned to build murals of the four national leaders at the bottom of the sculpture, Kushtia Municipality sources said.

The construction of one of the sculptures, Bangabandhu delivering his historic March 7 speech, started on November 17 and was nearing completion, Kushtia Municipality Engineer Rabiul Islam said.
