Police stations to be women, children friendly: IGP

Police chief AKM Shahidul Hoque has said all police stations across the country will be made women and children friendly.

The initiative, which will be implemented in phases, has been undertaken to protect them from all sorts of repressions, the Inspector General of Police (IGP) has said.

"All police stations will be made women and children friendly as we are very much sincere to prevent repressions on women and children," he said as the chief guest while addressing a inaugural function of a project titled "Sustainable Initiative to Protect Women and Girls from Gender Based Violence" at a city hotel on Monday.

"Efficiency and capability in investigating into women and children torture cases have been increased by many fold," he also said.

Stressing the need for increasing local and international assistances and its proper coordination, IGP said, "It is impossible for police alone to stop atrocities on women and children."

Speaking on the occasion as the special guest Resident Coordinator of the United Nations, Mia Seppo praised the Bangladesh Police for reducing gender based violence and hoped Bangladesh police will continue their efforts to this end.

Taking part in the discussion UNFPA (United Nations Population Fund) in Bangladesh Lori Kato expressed hope that Bangladesh will be able to achieve sustainable development goals (SDGs) by 2030 especially in stopping repression on women and girls with completion of the project.

The UNFPA has been implementing the project in 51 police stations under four districts to increase efficiency and capability in conducting investigation into cases regarding torture on women and children. The project will be completed by 2020. Already 12 women desks have been set up under the project.

Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of police (special crime management) AFM Masum Rabbani presided over the function while Additional IGP (admin and operations) Md Mukhlesur Rahman greeted the guests, reports BSS.
