Police recover Niazul’s ‘lost’ pistol

Police have recovered the pistol AKM Shamim Osman MP’s henchman Niazul Islam allegedly lost during an attack on Mayor Selina Hayat Ivy and her supporters in Narayanganj city on January 16.

They, however, could not arrest Niazul, who was seen brandishing the pistol in photos of the attack published in the media.

Additional Superintendent of Police MD Sharfuddin said they recovered the firearm, wrapped in polythene in a flower tub, in front of a church at Chashara about 2am on Friday.

There were 10 rounds of bullets in the pistol’s magazine, he said, adding that efforts are on to arrest Niazul, who has been on the run since the attack.

More than 50 people, including journalists, were injured as a clash ensued after supporters of Shamim Osman attacked Ivy and her supporters over the eviction of hawkers in the city’s Chashara 11 days ago.

Niazul then drew out his pistol and tried to open fire on Mayor Ivy and her supporters and came under a mob beat and lost it.

The next day, he had a case filed with Narayanganj Model Police Station, accusing 17 supporters of Ivy of snatching his firearm and attempting to murder him.

On the other hand, five days after the incident, Narayanganj City Corporation’s Law Officer GMA Sattar filed a case with the same police station on charges of attempting to murder Mayor Ivy in a planned way.

Police received neither complaint as case and recorded them as general diary only.

As for attacking police and barring them from doing their duty, Inspector Joynal Abedin filed a case against 500 people, so far unnamed.
