Police arrest former NSI director over war crime allegations

Police have arrested former National Security Intelligence (NSI) Director General Muhammad Wahidul Haque on charges of committing crimes against humanity during the Liberation War of 1971.

International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) Investigator Motiur Rahman said Wahidul Haque was arrested from his Baridhara home in Dhaka on Tuesday following an arrest warrant issued by the ICT.

Wahidul Haque will be produced before the ICT on Wednesday, reports bdnews24.com.

ICT Prosecutor Tureen Afroz said a two-member tribunal headed by Justice Amir Hossain issued the warrant in response to an appeal from the prosecution.

During the liberation war, Wahidul was a member of Pakistan Army.

In December 1974, he joined Bangladesh Police after returning home.

In the 1990s, he joined NSI and later served the Passport Department as its DG.

Tureen said Wahidul is accused of killing innocent people in Rangpur Cantonment in 1971.

“We are investigating his alleged involvement in the war crimes,” she said.
