PM to inaugurate 140 cyclone and flood centres Sunday

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will inaugurate virtually 140 cyclone and flood shelters besides laying foundation of 50 Mujib Killas across the country on Sunday, State Minister for Disaster Management and Relief Dr Mohammad Enamur Rahman has said.

Also on Sunday 30 district relief and disaster management information centres and five Mujib Killas will also be inaugurated by the prime minister, Dr. Enamur told a press briefing on Saturday.

Besides, construction, renovation, and development activities of 550 Mujib Killas' are underway in 148 coastal and flood-hit Upazilas, according to the minister.

Mujib Killas' are basically earthen forts which were built to protect people's lives and property from cyclones and floods under the direction of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman after the independence.

The minister said that 92,000 people and 23,000 cattle have found shelter in 230 two-storey flood shelters constructed for the vulnerable people at the flood-prone and river-eroded areas.

Dr Enamur said around 66 district relief warehouses and disaster management information centres were set up in 64 districts alongside adequate relief supplies so that the affected people can get help immediately after disasters.

"Necessary equipment including aquatic sea search-boats, marine rescue boats, megaphone sirens, equipment, and vehicles have been provided to the concerned departments including the Fire Service and Civil Defense Department and the Armed Forces Department for conducting rapid rescue and search operations," the minister said.
