Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has received two international awards for her humanitarian roles in the Rohingya response from separate organisations during the UN General Assembly (UNGA) in New York.
She received ‘International Achievement Award’ from the Inter Press Service and ‘Special Recognition for Outstanding Leadership ' award from the Global Hope Recognition Coalition on Thursday.
The prime minister dedicated the awards to the people of Bangladesh and said all countries should stand beside the oppressed and repressed people, reports bdnews24.
The Inter Press Service News Agency awarded her ‘International Achievement Award’ for her exemplary humanitarian response by giving shelter to more than one million Rohingyas.
Former UN Secretaries-General Kofi Annan and Boutros Boutros-Ghali and Finland’s President Martti Ahtisaari received the award for their different roles before.
The Global Hope Coalition, a network of three not-for-profit foundations based in New York, gave Hasina ‘2018 Special Recognition for Outstanding Leadership award’ for her ‘farsighted leadership’ during the Rohingya crisis.
At the UNGA, Bangladesh highlighted the issues related to the Rohingya crisis as the country has given shelter to over 700,000 Myanmar nationals who fled ethnic cleansing in the Rakhine State since Aug 25 last year.
The prime minister placed five proposals during the last UN summit. One of that was the implementation of the Kofi Annan Commission report which was agreed upon by all including the Myanmar’s allies in the UN Security Council -- China and Russia.
