The ruling Awami League has started its campaign through seeking votes at a public rally in Sylhet for next parliamentary election expected to be held in December 2018.

“Our election campaign starts here,” AL chief Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina told the crowd at Government Alia Madrasha ground in Sylhet on Tuesday.

“I seek your vote for Boat in the polls slated for December,” Hasina said referring to her party’s symbol.

"When Awami League comes to power, the country sees development but BNP destroys the country's image when it comes to power, "she said.

“Raise your hands and promise that you will vote for us. Bangladesh shot to global fame because you voted for us in the past,” the Prime Minister said.

The Prime Minister came down hard on the BNP saying it’s a party which only “knows how to destroy”, according to bdnews24.

"BNP indulges in terrorism and killings when it comes to power. This party was behind the rise in militancy in Bangladesh," she told the rally seeking vote for Awami League.

“They have burnt down thousands of vehicles in five years. Firebombs burnt 3,000 people,” Hasina said.

This is Sheikh Hasina's first visit to the north-eastern city since taking office for the second consecutive term in 2014.

According to UNB, the Prime Minister also offered fateha at the shrines of Hazrat Shahjalal (RA), Hazrat Shah Paran (RA) and Hazrat Gazi Borhan Uddin (RA).
