PM for united stance to resist militancy

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has condemned the deadly suicide bomb attacks in Sri Lanka on Easter Sunday.

Hasina also called for a united stand against militancy and terrorism.

She made the remarks at the start of her press conference over her recent visit to Brunei, reports bdnews24.com.

The press conference began in Ganabhaban at 4:00pm on Friday. Members of the cabinet and senior Awami League leaders were in attendance.

The prime minister left for Brunei on a three-day official visit at the invitation of Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah on Apr 21. Christians around the world celebrated Easter Sunday on that day.

But on the morning of Easter Sunday, a series of coordinated suicide bomb attacks at several churches and hotels devastated Sri Lanka.

Zayan Chowdhary, the 8-year-old grandson of Hasina’s relative and Awami League Presidium Member Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim, was among the 253 casualties in the attacks.

His father Moshiul Haque Chowdary Prince was also injured in the incident.

Zayan, the son of Selim’s daughter Sheikh Amina Sultana Sonia, had travelled to Sri Lanka with his family on a holiday tour.

The prime minister offered her condolences for the death of Zayan and the other casualties in the Easter Sunday attacks. She also hoped for a quick recovery of those injured in the bomb blasts.

Hasina said that she was first informed of the attacks in Brunei before receiving word of Zayan’s death.

“I sent a condolence message to the Sri Lankan prime minister condemning the attacks as soon as I received the news. I strongly condemn these cowardly attacks. We must create a consensus against militancy and I urge everyone to take effective measures against it.”
