Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has urged parents to guide their daughters to become self reliant and also ensure that they work and continue their studies at the same time.
"The economic freedom is very crucial for the women. So the womenfolk of the country shouldn't sit idle (in houses) and they will have to work and stand on their own feet side by side with pursuing study,” she said.
The PM came up with the remarks at the inaugural function on the International Women's Day at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre on Thursday, as per agencies reports.
“We want to ensure that women make their marks in every sector and Bangladesh has come a long way in doing so,” added Hasina.
“I am sure they are doing a splendid job. All it takes is a little bit of courage,” she continued.
The premier also asserted that parents will not pressure girls into marriage if they see girls growing independent and contributing to family income.
Education will be provided to women in every division through vocational colleges, she noted.
“Government training centres will be open for both men and women in every upazila. Already 70 such centres are operating in the country. Hostels for working women will be set up in every district and ultimately in every upazila”, she said.
The premier also informed that Prime Minister's Education Assistance Trust provides scholarships for higher education. Girls account for 75 per cent of recipients.
Highlighting microcredit available for women across the country, Hasina said: “We are creating opportunities for them to build businesses.”
Hasina stressed setting up more day-care centres across the country so that a mother can relax and work by knowing her child is safe.
Driving and computer learning are among many forms of training available for women, Hasina said adding that the trainees get allowances as well.
The event was moderated by State Minister for Women and Children Affairs Meher Afroze Chumki.
UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative in Bangladesh Mia Seppo was present in the function as the special guest, while Women and Children Affairs Secretary Nasima Begum delivered the welcome address.
Earlier, the prime minister handed over "Joyeeta Sammanana" to five women for their outstanding contributions to their respective fields.
They are Brishti and Feroza Khatun from Dhaka division, Nasima Khatun of Khulna division, Hola Cra Pru Marma of Chittagong division and Amena Begum of Rajshahi division.
