People want continuity of government, development: PM

Prime Minister and Awami League (AL) President Sheikh Hasina on Monday said people elected her party again as the common people were the beneficiaries of the steps her government took over the past 10 years.

“They (people) wanted continuity of the government, development for which they overwhelmingly’ voted for us,” Sheikh Hasina said.

The Prime Minister said it in an interaction with foreign journalists at her official Ganobhaban residence.

Hasina also said only the people who voted for her will not be benefitted as her party got re-elected for the third consecutive time, according to state-owned BSS and television channels.

“I will be the premier of all”, she added.

The PM also said the opposition was in a state of wilderness that caused their debacle in the elections.

“It was a credible and transparent election . . . but (opposition) BNP’s debacle in the polls was caused by their own faults and weakness,” she said.

Sheikh Hasina indentified BNP’s leadership vacuum as their prime weakness.

BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia is serving a prison term on graft charges while acting BNP chief  Tarique Rahman is staying abroad to evade a life term imprisonment for involvement in the deadly 2004 grenade attack.
