PABNA, July 7: Due to favourable climate condition and necessary agri-input, the farmers of Pabna district have achieved over some 0.2 million maunds of fresh groundnut yield this season.
The farmers were passing busy time from last week of June to harvest the crops across in Sujanagar, Santhia, Bera, Iswardi and sadar upazilas of the district.
During the idle time, the day labours got a job to manage the expenditure of the family members, said Salam Hossain, 45, under Bera upazila of the district.
He cultivated groundnut on five bighas of land spending Tk 35,000 this season, said farmer Alal Hossain, 55, at Shukhchara village under sadar upazila adding that he got some 120 maunds of raw yield.
In a recent visit at different villages of the district the correspondent found the farmers of the char area are separating the crops from the weed. Each maund of row groundnut is being sold at Tk 1800 to 2000 while Tk 2200 to 2300 of dried one.
Wholesaler Idris Ali under Santhia upazila said, they are purchasing the crops from the farmers directly and sending them to Dhaka, Rajshahi, Khulna and Narayanganj mitigating the local demand.
The soil of the district is quite favourable for groundnut growing, said deputy director of Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) Bivity Bhusan. DAE also provided all sort of necessary agri-input to make the farming a grand success, he added.
