RANGPUR, Jan 07: The blooming Sajina (drumstick) trees in different areas under the district and its adjacent areas have taken an eye-catching look with huge flowers predicting a good yield of the vegetable during this year.
Sajina is a nutritious vegetable and its flowers, roots and seeds are used as herbal medicine, according to physicians.
Visiting different areas of the region this FE correspondent found the growers taking care of their Sajina trees. This year farmers of the district made vigorous efforts with the hope to get expected output as well as handsome profit from the sale of the popular vegetable.
Sources said, the peasants are earning good profit through the cultivation of Sajina in recent years which is encouraging them to enhance its cultivation this year.
Mainul Islam, a grower of Sajina at Pairaband area in Mithapukur upazila said he prefers farming vegetables due to high profit in comparison with many other crops.
During the last few years he has been getting a good yield as well as handsome profit from the farming of the Sajina, he also said.
Akmal, another Sajina grower of Laldighi village in Badarganj upazila said, a good number of farmers of his area are showing their interest in the farming of Sajina than the cultivation of other crops owing to huge profit.
Last year he made satisfactory profit from the sale of the vegetable, he added.
Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), Rangpur official sources said owing to good profit the farmers of the region are getting interested to cultivate different varieties of vegetables including Sajina in recent years.
The department has taken various steps including timely supply of necessary agri-inputs and advices to increase production of different vegetables including Sajina across the region, sources added.
