Party feud behind AL's Shapna murder: Police

A case has been filed against party opponents over the murder of Brahmanbaria Awami League leader Shapna Akhtar.

Police have also taken an autorickshaw driver into custody for questioning, reports bdnews24.com.

Shapna’s older brother Amir Hossain filed a case against seven people at the Nabinagar Police Station around midnight on Wednesday, said Brahmanbaria Superintendent of Police Md Mizanur Rahman.

“We believe the murder may have been caused by an intra-party dispute. We are investigating the whereabouts of the suspects.”

Shapna, 40, was the Awami League Women’s Affairs Secretary for Nabinagar Upazila. She was hacked to death in the Upazila’s Satmora Union’s Bhangura around 9pm on Wednesday night. She had been returning home from a party meeting in Satmara Upazila on an autorickshaw.

“The case accuses those who had political or personal conflicts with Sharna. Police have taken an autorickshaw driver named Jahangir into custody for questioning.”

The names and addresses of the suspects have not been released because of the ongoing investigation, police said.
