Parliament passes bill to give BMD legal shape

A bill titled, 'Abhawa Ain, 2018', first such legal framework in the country to deal with the issues relating to the meteorological activities, was passed in Parliamenton Wednesday.

The Bill which was placed by Law MinisterAnisul Huq in the House on April 8 was passed by voice vote.

Once enacted, the law will give the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) a legal shape, reports UNB

The law sorted the activities and services of the department, which mainly deals with the forecasting the natural disasters and everyday weather patterns.

The proposed law has also defined the term 'meteorology' and 'meteorological phenomenon', tsunami, earthquake and other natural disasters.

It has defined the eligibility of the persons to be considered as the meteorological scientists.  According to the Bill, all atmospheric events happening within the space and beyond will be considered as the meteorological phenomenon.

Under the proposed law, the BMD will have the authority to take training and research programmes for the capacity building of its manpower.
