RANGPUR, Feb 17: Papaya growers across the district are optimistic of getting an excellent yield this season amid a favourable weather condition.
The growers are also happy for getting expected price of their produce which made them hopeful to expand its cultivation next season as well.
While visiting different areas of the district it was found that the farmers were busy nurturing their papaya orchards. Some were found spraying medicine and pesticides on the field to protect the vegetable from pest menace.
Many farmers were found harvesting their produces with enthusiasm.
Due to good profit the peasants are getting more interested in the cultivation of different varieties of vegetables including papaya in recent years than the cultivation of some other crops, sources said.
Taleb Mia, a farmer at Boiragiganj village at Mithapukur upazila told The Financial Express that he cultivated papaya on 30 decimals of land during this season and the condition of its growth is satisfactory.
Smooth supply of agri-inputs has boosted its farming, he added.
Suresh Chandra, another farmer of Nabdiganj village under Pirgachha upazila said he has already earned Tk 10,000 by growing papaya on 25 decimals of land and is hopeful of getting more profit from the vegetable during the rest of the year.
The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), Rangpur official sources said good prices as well as growing demand have encouraged the cultivators to cultivate papaya and some other vegetables on a large scale this year.
Use of modern technology also enhanced its production, sources added.
