Panel seeks PM's intervention for fair BAIRA polls

A section of manpower recruitment agencies sought on Thursday intervention of the Prime Minister and the apex chamber FBCCI in organising a free and fair election for formation of the BAIRA executive committee for the next term.

They sought the intervention at a press conference, held at the Dhaka Reporters Unity in the city.

The Bangladesh Association of International Recruiting Agencies (BAIRA) election (2018-2020) is scheduled to be held on September 20.

They expressed their concern that the upcoming BAIRA election might not be fair due to interference of a vested quarter.

They said a politically-influential person on behalf of the present BAIRA committee warned the recruiters not to participate in the election.

Shafiqul Alam Firoj, panel chief of the Shammilito Shamonnoy front, said a section of manpower recruiters, involved in the syndicate monopolising the Malaysian job market wanted to get the incumbent BAIRA president re-elected unopposed.

"So they were threatening us not to participate in BAIRA election," he said.

Mr Firoj said they believe that all manpower recruiters have rights to take part in election and do business in the country.

He also expressed worries that the vested quarter might create a problem during the nomination submission scheduled for September 3.

Ex-secretary general of BAIRA Ali Haider Chowdhury and Monsur Ahmed also were present at the press conference.

Replying to a query, Mr Ali said if they are elected, they will not allow any syndication. Monopoly business is always bad for every trade.

Abdul Alim, proprietor of S.A Trading, and Abul Bashar, former joint secretary general of BAIRA, among others, were present at the programme.
