Over 2,100 people died with coronavirus-like symptoms on Mar 22-Aug 15

A total of 2,110 people died with Covid-19 like symptoms in the country in last five months from March 22 to August 15, according to a latest report.

A project titled 'Bangladesh Peace Observatory (BPO)' under Centre for Genocide Studies at Dhaka University revealed the report.

From August 9 to August 15, some 56 people died with Covid 19- like symptoms while from August 2 to August 8, some 63 people died with Covid 19- like symptoms.

From July 26 to August 1, some 36 people died with Covid 19- like symptoms while in the previous week from July 19 to July 25, some 71 people had died with the same symptoms.

222 people died with such symptoms from June 21 to June 27, which was the highest number of deaths in a week.

BPO has prepared the report based on information it collected from 25 media outlets, including national and regional dailies, TV channels and news portals.

But this information has not been verified at field level.

BPO has regularly been publishing reports on multiple issues with financial support from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

Dhaka division reported 391 deaths with such symptoms from March 22 to August 15 while the death toll in Chattogram division climbed to 704.

Mymensingh division recorded the lowest 60 deaths during the period, the BPO report said.

The death toll in Sylhet, Rajshahi, Rangpur, Khulna and Barishal divisions rose to 100, 216, 92, 306 and 241 respectively.

BPO in its report said law enforcers arrested 87 people in 86 incidents from March 08 to August 15 on charges of spreading rumour and false information about the virus.

Public transport drivers and vehicles were fined at a high number last week (August 9-15) because of the violation of the government order of taking up passengers and not maintaining health safety guidelines.

Some 44 per cent of the total fine cases were filed for not wearing face masks in public places and 30 per cent of the fine cases were for not maintaining hygiene in public in August 02-08. Not wearing face masks and not maintaining health guidelines in public remains the major cause of being fined for the mass people in the following week.

Besides, 624 people were arrested for embezzling relief materials, adulterating food and violating government guidelines on the pandemic as of August 15.

Fine/penalty were imposed on 12,854 people across the country from March 08 to August 15.
