OIC council of FMs starts in city Saturday

The Rohingya issue will figure prominently in the upcoming Council of Foreign Ministers of the Organisation of the Islamic Cooperation (OIC), which starts in the city tomorrow (Saturday).

More than 550 delegates including 40 ministers and state ministers from the OIC member countries will attend the 45th council, foreign minister AH Mahmood Ali told reporters at the foreign ministry Thursday.

The minister said the Rohingya issue would get prominence in the council and a special session would be devoted to the crisis in the council, where the delegates from OIC countries will present their opinions to resolve the issue.

Ahead of the council, the delegates visit Rohingya camps in Cox's Bazar on Friday to have a firsthand assessment of the situation.

"Canadian foreign minister will be the special guest in the inaugural session. Foreign ministers of Sweden and Germany were also invited to the council, considering the contribution of these countries to the welfare of Muslim refugee migrants but they expressed their inability to come due to their domestic situation," Mr Ali said.

Internal conflicts among Muslim countries, humanitarian crisis faced by the Muslim community across the world, socio-economic development of the OIC member countries will be the discussed at the council, he added.

He said that through holding the council, Bangladesh would have the opportunity to project its achievements to the international community.

"Bangladesh has made significant progress in women empowerment, socio-economic development, maintaining religious harmony, fighting the impact of climate change and containing terrorism. We want to highlight these achievements at the conference," he said.

The minister said through holding this council, Bangladesh will have the scope for brightening its image not only among the OIC member countries but also in the world.
