Quader discharged from Singapore hospital

Awami League leader Obaidul Quader has been discharged from Singapore's Mount Elizabeth Hospital after a month of treatment.

Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Director Prof Abu Naser Rizvi, who has accompanied the roads and bridges minister to Singapore, said that Quader was cleared to leave the hospital on Friday afternoon.

But despite being discharged from the hospital, the Awami League general secretary will not return to Bangladesh just yet.

He will remain in Singapore for a few more days to undergo follow-up care, said Abu Naser Tipu, the deputy chief information officer in the roads and bridges ministry’s Road Transport and Highways Division.

"He (Quader) is currently healthy. He will move to a rented house nearby after his release from hospital in the afternoon. He will receive follow-up treatment there in accordance with doctors' recommendations."

A photo of Obaidul Quader, taken on Friday, was posted on Facebook by Tipu. The minister is seen sitting beside Dr Philip Koh, the head of the medical board formed to overseeing his treatment.

On March 2, Quader was rushed to the BSMMU in critical condition by his wife Ishratunnesa Quader after he fell ill.

He was found to have three arterial blocks, one of which was removed by stenting, according to BSMMU Cardiology Department Prof Syed Ali Ahsan.

He was flown to Singapore’s Mount Elizabeth Hospital in an air ambulance on March 4 after he was stable enough to travel.

A medical panel was formed to oversee the minister’s treatment upon his arrival at Mount Elizabeth Hospital, bdnews24.com reports.

The 67-year-old Quader was diagnosed with a combination of kidney and blood-related ailments after undergoing tests at the hospital.

He was placed in the Intensive Care Unit and given medical treatment for a few days. He was then transferred to a cabin on March 13 after his health improved.

After his health improved under treatment, Quader underwent a bypass surgey overseen by Dr Sivathasan Cumaraswamy, a cardiothoracic surgeon at Mount Elizabeth Hospital.

Six days later, he was transferred from the Intensive Care Unit to a cabin in the hospital.
