The number of prisoners stood at 89,097 as of December 14, 2018, according to the Prisons Directorate under the Ministry of Home Affairs.
Of the total number of prisoners, 17,147 are convicts and the rest 71,950 are facing trials. The number of female prisoners is only 3,401.
There are 68 jails all over the country with a total capacity of holding 36,614 inmates. Of them, the capacity for male prisoners is 34,940, while it is 1,674 for female inmates.
