The number of prisoners in the country has witnessed a significant decline in the last 14 days.
There were 92,845 inmates as on January 18 and it decreased by 3,281 to 89,564 on February 1, 2019, according to the data provided by the Prisons Directorate under the Ministry of Home Affairs on Friday.
Of the total number of prisoners, 16,053 are convicts and the rest 73,511 undertrials, it said adding that the number of female prisoners is only 3,302.
There are 68 jails all over the country with a total capacity of 40,664 inmates - 38,745 men and 1,919 women.
