The number of prisoners as of January 29, 2021, stood at 82,345, according to the Department of Prisons under the Ministry of Home Affairs.
Of the prisoners, 17,128 are convicts and the rest 65,217 are facing trial.
A total of 16,495 male convicted prisoners are staying in jails.
The number of female inmates is only 3,140. Of them, 633 female are convicted prisoners.
There are 68 jails all over the country having a total capacity of holding 42,150 inmates. Of them, the capacity for male prisoners is 40,221, while the capacity for female prisoners is 1,929.
