Number of cases filed, fines witness significant rise in September: BRTA

Both the number of cases lodged and the amount of fine witnessed a significant rise in the ninth month of the current calendar year compared to any previous months as Bangladesh’s transport regulator continues its drive.

Mobile courts of Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) filed 2,355 cases against vehicles and realised over Tk 3.34 million in fines for violating traffic rules in September.

Apart from this, the courts also dumped 18 vehicles for violating traffic rules in 266 drives during the period while 21 persons were jailed, according to a BRTA monthly report.

On the other hand, the courts also dumped five vehicles for violating traffic rules in 201 drives in June 2020 while no persons were jailed.

The BRTA conducts mobile court drives regularly across the country to bring discipline and order on the roads.

It lodged the cases as per the new Road Transport Act 2018 and other laws. The new law was enforced on the first day of November 2019.

The transport regulator filed 700 cases against vehicles and realised over Tk 686,470 in fines for violating traffic rules during drives in June 2020.

BRTA filed 947 cases against vehicles and realised over Tk 2.69 million in fines for violating traffic rules during drives in March 2020.

In February 1,211 cases were filed against vehicles and the transport regulator realised over Tk 2.78 million in fines for violating traffic rules while in January 864 cases were filed and the BRTA realised over Tk 1.92 million in fines for violating traffic rules.

Apart from this, the courts also jailed 11 persons in 133 drives in January 2020 while no vehicles were dumped, according to a monthly report of the transport regulator.
