Nor’wester mars glee of Pahela Baishakh revellers

A nor'wester, coupled with a hailstorm, swept the capital on Saturday, the first day of Bangla New Year, bringing sufferings to the Pahela Baishakh revellers.
 

Met office recorded 30mm of rainfall in the city in two hours till 6pm, said meteorologist at Bangladesh Metrological Department Abdur Rahman, reports UNB.
 

He said many areas of the city experienced rain that started after 4:30pm. A hailstorm was also reported from a number of areas, he said.
 

Meanwhile, rain disrupted the outdoor celebrations of Pahela Baishakh.
As the nor'wester accompanied by the hailstorm came down in the city around 4:30pm, outdoor revellers were seen leaving the venues of different programmes to safety.
 

In Dhaka University areas, they took shelter in in TSC, DU Central Library, Ducsu cafeteria, Arts Building and Social Science Building.
 

Many events, including concerts, were also cancelled due to rain.
Rain was also recorded in Srimangal of Moulvibazar and Mymensingh, Rahman said.
 

According to the Met office, rain/thundershowers accompanied by temporary gusty/squally wind with lightning flashes is likely to occur at a few places over Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions and at one or two places over Rajshahi, Rangpur, Dhaka, Khulna, Barisal and Chattogram divisions with hails at isolated places over the country in the next 24 hours till 6pm on Sunday.

Day and night temperature may remain nearly unchanged over the country, it said.
